On Monday, January 16th Access Books provided 600 brand new, hardcover books to Nativity Schools lower level library creating a beautiful and fun space to read. Access Books provides books to inner-city schools where at least 90 percent of students live at or below the poverty level. Since 1999, Access Books has donated more than a million books, and each year, approximately 18,000 pre-kindergarten through middle school-aged children participate in their program.
Many wonderful volunteers took part in this special day. Nativity’s 8th grade students, students from Loyola High School, Los Angeles, Bishop Conaty-Our Lady of Loretta High School, Los Angeles, parents and students from American Martyrs School, Manhattan Beach and family and friends of Nativity painted murals, sorted and labeled books for the new library.
CBS News captured this special day interviewing Principal Antonio Felix who shared, “We needed books and bright colors to keep our students excited about reading and motivate them to continue to take books home to read. We cannot wait to see the look on our student’s faces tomorrow morning when they arrive to school.”
The day ended with a taco truck arriving to feed all the volunteers. Students deserve exposure to the love and rewards of reading. New books send a message that reading is important and Access Books wants children to find love and joy in reading.
